38 brave souls took to the start line for the preliminary stage of the Fall Season of the Peak Centre Indoor Racing Series, with a 21km rolling stage including 3 main climbs totalling just over 1000 feet of vertical ascent.  A big welcome must go out to The Cycle Studio, Carmen & Ascent Physio, Canmore who the first of the new locations to make their Winter Racing Series debuts this Fall!

10 riders edged under 40 minutes on the stage, with Teklit Tesfay (a former member of the Eritrea national team racing out of Peak Vancouver) taking the stage with a time of 35:16.6, only 6 seconds ahead of second placed rider Roger Lee of Peak Vancouver who came in at 35:22.9. Mike Wolfgram of SBR Coaching, Verona completed the podium posting an excellent time of 36:56.1. Behind the leaders, the field was very tightly packed either side of the 40 minute mark, with 11 riders covered by only 4 minutes. Many of these riders will be targeting the “A” category qualification time in the Original Time Trial, but with the big guns due to roll out for the OTT, will the current leaders hold onto their positions going into the points-scoring races?

The womens’ competition also saw numerous riders within touching distance of each other, which should provide some entertaining battles over the coming stages. Summer Ohlendorf of SBR Coaching, Verona took the stage with a time of 39:52.8 just ahead of Grace Menning of Peak Vancouver (41:34.2) and Shea Rankin of The Cycle Studio, Carmen (42:22.8), but most of the field was very tightly packed just outside the 40 minute mark which will ensure great competition in the season opener of the OTT next week.

The Original Time Trial next week will give the more powerful riders a chance to shine.  This course rides 22.53km and with less than half the climbing of this week’s stage, this course is all about sustained power output and smart pacing.  With the infusion of new talent this year, the question on everybody’s mind is whether the world record times of Derek St. John, Peak Ottawa – 33:45.9 and Sue Schlatter, Peak Ottawa – 37:14.6 set back in 2010 will stand for another season.
