Teklit Tesfay (Team Eretria) and Shea Rankin (The Cycle Studio, Carmen) continued their dominance of the early stages of the fall season with both riders taking their second stage victory of the season on Stage 2. The rolling course featured three long climbs, and favoured those riders who maintain large power outputs and grind out high speeds on gradients up to 5.5%.

Nevertheless, this was also the first sprint stage of the season, so the snappier riders also had a goal to shoot at. Tony Zackery (Peak Centre, Vancouver) took the spoils in the men’s competition hitting 12.65 Watts/kg (1119 Watts!) on the final section leading up to the finish, beating Jim Marcero (The Cycle Studio, Carmen) into second place (12.3 Watts/kg). The “Pocket Rocket” Roger Lee (Peak Centre, Vancouver) was 3rd (11.63 Watts/kg).

Shea Rankin showed Marianne Vos-like superiority by also taking victory in this competition with a peak of 9.9 Watts/kg, edging out Summer Ohlendorf (SBR Coaching, Verona) who managed 9.62 Watts/kg. Monika McDougal (The Cycle Studio, Carmen) was also close behind with a peak of 9.3 Watts/kg.

Teklit Tesfay meanwhile focused solely on the points for the stage, and was the only rider to finish under 40 minutes with a time of 39:53.6. Marcel Lavoie (Peak Centre, Ottawa) finished second, only 19 seconds back in a time of 40:12.3. Jay Menning (Peak Centre, Vancouver) rounded out the podium, improving on his 7th place finish on Stage 1.

The result stretches Teklit Tesfay’s lead on the GC to 11 points ahead of Roger Lee (Peak Centre, Vancouver) with Jay Menning moving up to 3rd. Only 10 points covers 3rd down to 18th, so with the pack lining up behind the early leaders, will the hillier stages to come see a reshuffle on GC?

Shea Rankin`s win (44:34.8) ahead of Grace Menning (Peak Centre, Vancouver; 45:43.8) extends her lead on GC to 6 points. Last year`s 3rd place finisher on GC Summer Ohlendorf (SBR Coaching, Verona) opened this year`s account with a 3rd place finish (45:49.7), only edged out by Grace Menning for second by a mere 6 seconds.

An 8th place finish in the Men’s B competition was enough to give Jean Fran Filion (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville) the overall lead in the Men`s B General Classification. The top 6 riders on GC are covered by only 7 points with Colin Kelly (1st on the stage in 45:28.6; Peak Centre, Ottawa), Johnathan Harris (2nd in 45:44.4; Peak Centre, Vancouver) and Patrick Melfi (3rd in 46:02.4; Cenre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville) all getting themselves in the mix with strong performnces this week.

Consistent results over the first two stages from Janet Capling (Peak Centre, Ottawa) have seen her climb into the lead of the Women`s B GC. She finished second on the stage (57:09.1) to Beth Denny (Peak Centre, Vancouver) who won her first stage at the first attempt with a time of 56:29.3. Jeanne Hunter (58:07.3; SBR Coaching,Verona) finished 3rd on the stage.

Next week the race moves into the foothills for a hilly route that features the first King of the Mountain points of the Fall. This stage will favour the all around rider who can put out the watts but also generates high power to weight ratios.
