Stage 4 of the Peak Centre Indoor Race Series threw a significant change in terrain at the 99 riders who completed the stage, with a super-tough stage that featured 4 climbs, but nevertheless had a net downhill profile. As a result, average speeds were high, with the stage winner Todd Reichert (Peak Centre, Ottawa) averaging 38.09 kph over the 22.9 km long stage to post a time of 36:05.0. Reichert`s victory ensured that we still have no repeat winners in the Men`s A classification this season. In contrast, Shea Rankin (The Cycle Studio, Carmel) has dominated the Women`s A classification, bagging the first 3 stages; however, she was denied a fourth win by a returning Summer Ohlendorf (SBR Coaching, Verona) who won the stage by only 11 seconds with a time of 41:56.4, ahead of the Cycle Studio riders Rankin (42:07.8) and Monika McDougal (43:29.6) who completed the podium for the stage.

This was by no means the closest finish between riders on the stage, with a 3-way blanket finish for 5th place. All 3 riders were covered by a mere 0.4 seconds, with Kory Seder (SBR Coaching, Verona; 37:21.4) edging out Teklit Tesfay (Team Eritrea; 37:21.7) & Jay Menning (Peak Centre, Vancouver; 37:21.8) with his final sprint for the line.

Things were also tight at the top; stage 3`s winner Alex Gagnon (Peak Centre, Ottawa) was Reichert`s closest challenger for the stage win, finishing 17 seconds down in a time of 36:22.9, and Dwayne Kress (Challenge by Choice, Squamish) was only a further 8 seconds further back in 36:30.0 to complete the podium. The third place finish was enough for Kress to take the lead on GC, 3 points ahead of Tesfay. Alex Gagnon`s performances mean he is hunting down the third spot on the podium, currently occupied by Roger Lee (Peak Centre, Vancouver) who is 10 points behind Kress.

In the Women`s A general classification, Rankin has extended her lead to a massive 26 points, and has a commanding lead at this early stage of the season. McDougal`s 3rd place finish on the stage sees her climb to join Grace Menning (Peak Centre, Vancouver) on 51 points to make up the top 3.

Mark Scott (Peak Centre, Ottawa) made it back-to-back stage wins in the Men`s B classification with a time of 39:50.3. He was the only rider in the Men`s B classification to finish in under 40 minutes, with second place going to debutant Mike Kleso (Challenge by Choice, Squamish; 40:02.5) and the final spot on the podium taken by Sean Rutledge (Natural High Fitness, Okotoks) just 6 more seconds back in a time of 40:08.2.

The stage win maintains Scott`s overall lead on GC.  Mike Fertuck (Peak Centre, Vancouver) climbs to second with a 4th place finish on the stage in 40:11.6. replacing last week’s second placed rider Bob McLaren (Peak Centre, Vancouver; 41:02.8) who drops to third (Bob`s consolation prize was beating his son Zack by 9 seconds).

The riders from Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville continue to dominate the Women`s B classification, taking 3 of the 4 stages so far, as well as the top two spots on GC. This week Mariepie Rochon (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme, VeloCite, Blainville) followed up her 4th place finish last week to take her first stage victory in a time of 49:32.5. The victory also saw her take the lead on the GC by 6 points from teammate Christiane Gagne (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville) who drops to second. Second on the stage meanwhile was Annerieke Vanhoek (Challenge by Choice,
Squamish) who finished in 50:21.6, and climbs to third on GC. 3rd place on the stage was debutant Myriam Burton (Peak Centre, Ottawa) in a time of 50:34.2.

Next week’s stage sees the riders tackle the fearsome slopes of the mountain stage, and the KOM competition resumes.
