Dwayne Kress (Challenge by Choice, Squamish) continues his domination of the fall season of the Peak Centre Indoor Racing series with his 5th straight win. With Kress excelling on a wide variety of terrains from mountains to downhill stages, and his rivals taking points off each other, it is hard to look past Kress for the overall victory. Kress completed the 24.1 km course in 36:52.1, 25 seconds ahead of Sean Anderson (SBR Coaching, Verona; 37:17.1) who secured his best finish of the season for the second week in a row. The win takes Kress’ lead beyond two whole stage victories, and looks to have tied up the season in his favour. His closest challenger Roger Lee (Peak Centre, Vancouver) was back on form this week, picking up a 3rd place finish in 37:21.8 after his disappointing result last time out.

Stage 9 was also a return to form for Women’s A classification Shea Rankin (The Cycle Studio, Carmel). Having not won a stage since stage 5, her lead had been cut dramatically; but this week she restored order by edging out stage 7 winner and defending champion Kelly Knowles (Peak Centre, Ottawa; 41:56.6) by 11 seconds to take the stage victory in a time of 41:45.8. 2nd on GC Sarah Greenwood (Challenge by Choice, Squamish; 43:20.5) could only finish 4th on the stage behind Summer Ohlendorf (SBR Coaching, Verona) who continues her bid to break into the top 4 with a time of 42:13.7. This result allowed Rankin to extend her lead overall to 30 points with only 3 stages remaining.

In the Men’s B classification, Scott Moon (The Cycle Studio, Carmel) upset the overall contenders with a storming ride of 38:31.9 to take the stage victory. The overall victory is likely to be out of reach for Moon, as is the case for second placed finished Johnathan Harris (Peak Centre, Vancouver) who also produced his best result of the season to finish in a time of 38:41.8. Mike Kleso (Challenge by Choice, Squamish) also put in his best performance in recent weeks to take 3rd in 38:51.1 to close the gap to the three leaders. With his rivals also struggling to score big points, a 5th place finish was enough for GC leader Mark Scott (Peak Centre, Ottawa; 39:11.0) to extend his overall lead to 10 points ahead of Patrick Melfi (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville; 40:03.9) who finished 7th.

In the women’s B classification Megan Davies (Peak Centre, Vancouver) continues to pick up the victories with her 5th stage win in 43:58.6, well clear of second place finisher Marie Dubois (Ascent Performance Lab, Canmore) who put in a sterling ride of 46:46.4 to mix it with the contenders for overall victory in her best result of the season. 3rd place on the stage was Karine Meilleur (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville; 46:48.9) who closes in on her teammate Marie-Pier Rochon who occupies the final podium spot on the overall standings. Christiane Gagne (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville) still holds on to top spot on GC, but her lead is reduced to a mere 2 points, setting up an exciting end to the season.

Next week sees the riders tackle a challenging course. Insiders have suggested that the stage is “a stage of two halves”. With most of the climbing in the first half of the stage, what pacing strategies will the riders adopt, and will any of the overall contenders suffer on the long false-flat sections in the second half of the stage? Can anyone stop Dwayne Kress?
