Dwayne Kress (Challenge by Choice, Squamish) stormed to yet another victory in stage 7 of the Peak Centre Indoor Racing Series to extend his lead over the field to 21 points. Kress completed the 21.6 km course in 35:39.7 for his third stage win in a row, putting him a clear 44 seconds ahead of a returning Alex Gagnon (Peak Centre, Ottawa) who finished second in 36:23.9. Roger Lee (Peak Centre, Vancouver) who was 3rd on GC going into the stage came in behind Gagnon in 36:56.7, but climbs to second on GC ahead of Teklit Tesfay (Team Eritrea) who drops to 3rd with a 14th place finish in 39:00.8.

In the women’s A classification, last season’s winner Kelly Knowles (Peak Centre, Ottawa) returned to take the stage in 40:59.0, just 5 seconds ahead of General  Classification leader Shea Rankin (The Cycle Studio, Carmel; 41:04.4). Knowles becomes only the second rider to deny Rankin the stage win, following Summer Ohlendorf’s (SBR Coaching, Verona) victory on stage 4. Ohlendorf could not match the times of Knowles and Rankin, but came in 3rd on the stage in 42:12.8 as the battle for the GC begins to hot up as we enter the second half of the season.

In the Men’s B classification, Patrick Melfi (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville) continued his great run of results to storm to the stage victory by over a minute. Melfi finished in 38:49.9, with his closest challenger Matt Carew (Peak Centre, Ottawa) coming in in 40:05.2 for second place. Melfi climbs to second behind overall leader Mark Scott (Peak Centre, Ottawa; 5th in 40:42.1) and above pre-stage second placed Mike Fertuck (Peak Centre, Vancouver; 6th in 41:34.0). 3rd place on the stage was Bill Martin (SBR Coaching, Verona; 40:06.1), just 1 second behind Carew, with Martin picking up big points on just his second stage.

As we enter the second half of the season, all the General Classifications are starting to take shape, and this is no less true in the Women’s B classification where Christiane Gagne (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville) has finally pulled out a significant lead. Gagne and her teammate Marie Pier Rochon (Centre Entrainement Cyclisme VeloCite, Blainville) had been almost inseparable on points up until this point, but Gagne’s second place finish on the stage in 48:52.1, behind Megan Davies (47:42.8), gave her a 14 point lead on GC. Davies also climbed above Rochon on General Classification, with Rochon finishing 8th on the stage in 51:07.5. Myriam Burton (Peak Centre, Ottawa) continued to score strong points with a 3rd place finish in 49:51.9.

Stage 7 also saw the re-introduction of the Sprint classification. Dwayne Kress was the only rider to score above 1000 Watts, but this was not enough to take the spoils. Roger Lee’s Peak Watts/kg of 12.81 saw him win the 20 points on offer ahead of Jim Marcero (The Cycle Studio, Carmel) who hit 12.54 Watts/kg. Kress was 3rd with 12.46 Watts/kg.

Not only was Shea Rankin prevented from winning the stage, she was also pipped to the post in the sprint competition. Jenni Chancey (Challenge by Choice, Squamish) managed 10.78 Watts/kg to beat Ohlendorf into second (10.40 Watts/kg) and Rankin into 3rd (9.58 Watts/kg).
